We went to the Jade factory and were amazed at the craftsmanship of the Chinese artists. They take what looks like regular stones and turn them into beautiful statues like the elephant in these pictures. Our new daughters name is Yu which means jade, so we really took interest. Jade is very important to the Chinese people and it represents good fortune and longevity. You can tell real jade because it can change color slightly when held in your hand because of body temperature. It comes in many colors, not just the famous green. From white to dark colors; even a rare and beautiful yellow that is transparent. The lady in the photo holds a ball with balls inside...all cut from one stone. They can make up to 12 balls, 11 inside the 1!
It's been wonderful learning about Chinese culture and history. It helps us to know for our daughter what kind of country she comes from and how we can share it with her later.
